Born in Dieppe, Jean Rédélé chose the name Alpine for his cars after achieving success in the French Alps' rally sport with his Renault 4C in 1954. He continually developed his Renault-based vehicles, achieving rally success with attractive bodies and Renault's support. Initially, 1.5-liter Alpine cars were used in Le Mans in the mid-sixties, but it was the 3-liter formula introduced in 1968 that paved the way for Alpine's overall victory. The A220 resulted from combining a new tubular frame with a new aerodynamic body and a 3-liter V8 Gordini engine created by using two 1.5-liter blocks. On the right of the watercolor, a factory car driven by Jean-Pierre Jabouille and Jean Guichet is visible. To its left, an Ecurie Savin-Calberson-entered 220 driven by Mauro Bianchi and Patrick Depailler is shown. Neither vehicle reached the finish line.
