Birkenau Wagon by Yad Vashem

Upon entering Birkenau, a solitary wagon stands on tracks leading from the gate to the gas chambers, a silent sentinel since its arrival in 2009. Within lies a small blue velvet prayer bag, a poignant reminder of resilience and faith. Once thriving in Hungary for centuries, Jews faced sudden peril in 1944 when Germany occupied the country. Within months, over half a million Hungarian Jews perished, mostly in Auschwitz-Birkenau's gas chambers, transported in tightly packed wagons. This very wagon, crafted in early 20th-century Germany for goods transport, bore thousands to their fate. Discovered in 2008, it was donated to the Auschwitz State Museum by its enthusiast owner. A man, then just 13 when his father vanished in 1944, oversaw its search, conservation, and placement in Birkenau. His father, Hugo Lowy, was among those murdered upon arrival, refusing to surrender his prayer bag containing his tallit and tefillin. Decades later, a chance encounter with a witness revealed Hugo's fate, ending the family's uncertainty.
