In 1929, the development of an armored car based on a 6 x 4 truck chassis was commissioned, with three companies tasked with its design. These initial designs were essentially armored bodies fitted onto modified truck chassis. The Sd Kfz 231 (6-Rad), introduced in 1932, featured a front-mounted engine driving the rear axles, with the front axles steering, allowing a top speed of 37 mph. Crewed by four and protected by up to 8mm of armor, it was armed with a 2cm KwK30 L/55 cannon and a 7.92cm MG13, both with 360 traverse in a rear-mounted turret. Variants included the Sd Kfz 232 (6-Rad) (Fu) with a prominent aerial, and the Sd Kfz 263 command vehicle with a single machine gun. Serving in Poland and France, it was later withdrawn from frontline service.
