The M60 was a second-generation American main battle tank, the final iteration of the Patton series initiated post-World War II. It began service with the US Army in 1960, with Chrysler producing around 15,000 units at the Detroit Tank Arsenal Plant until 1983. Deployed by both the US Army and Marine Corps, it was NATO's primary armored force in Europe during the '60s, '70s, and early '80s. Widely adopted, it served in over 25 countries and coexisted with the M1 Abrams until the 1990s, retiring from US military service in 1997.
