In wartime 1943, a hunted boy fleeing west into the forests outside Tarnów stumbles onto an abandoned railway siding where black thorn spirals rise between dead rails like something cultivated for judgment rather than beauty. Hanging inside the whorls are hand-stamped metal tags, names without bodies, years without graves. By the time the boy understands what the place is, it has already begun taking more than his breath.
