The Hungarian light tank Toldi, based on the Swedish Landsverk L-60, began production in 1939 and entered service in 1940. It had four main variants: Toldi I with a 20mm gun, Toldi II with enhanced frontal armor, Toldi IIa armed with a 40mm gun, and Toldi III featuring improved, thicker armor, with only 12 produced. Toldi tanks saw combat in Yugoslavia and the Soviet Union in 1941. Hungarian commanders found Toldi I insufficiently armored and armed against Soviet tanks, leading to upgrades. Toldi II, introduced in 1942, initially retained the 20mm gun, which was later replaced by a more effective 40mm anti-tank gun in the Toldi IIa variant, with 80 out of 110 Toldi IIs upgraded. Toldi III, with even thicker armor, was produced too late due to material shortages and Allied bombings, resulting in only 12 units.
