Vintage ceramic Dutch boy spill vase. Hand painted and with an iridescent metallic glaze (lusterware). Probable to have been manufactured in Germany. They were used to hold rolled paper or thin wood "spills" for transferring fire from fireplaces to lamps and pipes. Commonly produced in Victorian times, throughout the 18th century and were most common before affordable matches became widely available in the late 19th century. It can be used to hold long matches, or as a pot for pens, makeup brushes, cotton buds, a vase or small planter. It's just so very cute! ❤️ Very good vintage condition, no cracks, chips or crazing. Please see photos for description and measurements. Please note that the pound coin is used for scale purposes only and is not included in the sale.
